By refusing to act in ways not viewed as legitimate and morally defensible, society sets the tone for ethical behavior. Religious ideology motivates many to do what's right out of fear of eternal punishment, or hope of eternal reward. However many more people do so - just because, filling me with hope that the notion of free will really does exist.
